19.04.11 Chiesi Group´s financial statement 2010 approved: sales exceed one billion euro

The Board of Directors approved the draft financial statements for 2010; sales exceed one billion euro

The positive trend in performance continued with consolidated revenue of € 1,015 billion, up by 16.4% compared with 2009 and R&D investments of € 150.3 million (+ 13.3%).

Chiesi Farmaceutici, the Italian pharmaceuticals company that specialises in respiratory and cardiovascular treatments and in specialised diseases, ended FY 2010 with a consolidated turnover of € 1,015 billion, reporting a rise of 16.4% compared to 2009.

The final results of 2010 show and confirm the positive performance of the Group, which earned more than 70% of the annual turnover earned outside of Italy, with growth concentrated largely on the international markets.

In 2010, the Chiesi Group’s growth was driven by products resulting from internal research. One in particular, Foster, is designed to treat asthma and was introduced on the market in Brazil, Poland and Croatia, reinforcing the already exceptional results in the markets where it is currently present. Foster was awarded the indication for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in Turkey. Its overall sales increased by 33% compared to 2009.

Sales of Curosurf, a world leader in treating respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in premature infants, have increased by 30%.

In keeping with the investment plans allocated to the innovation that the company pursues, R&D activities have also increased throughout 2010. R&D investments accounted for 14.8% of turnover, for a value of € 150.3 million.

Demonstrating this commitment for the fourth consecutive year, in 2010, Chiesi stands in first place among Italian investors in Research & Development in the pharmaceutical sector, eighth in the ranking among the larger national conglomerates in every sector, and fourteenth among European pharmaceutical multinationals.

In addition to celebrating the 75th anniversary in the business, the Group also launched operations of the new associate Chiesi Belgium SA. In January, it was awarded the Research & Development Award from UK Trade & Investment for opening its research laboratory in Chippenham.

The company filed 193 patent applications in 2010 and obtained 21 new original patents, which added to the intellectual property of the Group.

Throughout the year, work continued as scheduled on construction of the new Research Centre in Parma, designed for more than 300 researchers. The Centre will become operational in July 2011 and will be officially inaugurated in September of this year.

One of the key factors of the Company’s success has always been the utmost attention it pays to its employees. Chiesi employs more than 3,700 workers, reporting a 6% increase on a year earlier. For the third consecutive year, this attention is demonstrated by the recognition it earned as a Top Employer 2011 which considered the employment conditions, flexibility, and career opportunities offered by the company.

“The financial year 2010 was distinguished by Chiesi reaching sales in excess of one billion euro and by its increasing presence outside of Italy. International sales now account for more than 70% of total revenue,” remarked Alberto Chiesi, chairman and director. “The 75th anniversary was celebrated by reaching these key objectives which represent two important bases for future growth. The Group intends to continue its sustainable growth policy with an investment plan that will focus in 2011 on completing construction of the Research Centre, the production line for Foster DPI and on upgrading of the company IT platform.”
