24.02.11 Takeback of Curosurf® in Russia and CIS

Curosurf® will be marketed in the territory of Russia and some countries of the CIS by Chiesi starting February 19, 2011. During the past years it was licensed out to a partner company.

Curosurf®, developed by Chiesi itself, is a natural surfactant for substituting a lack of endogenous surfactant and is administered via intratracheal instillation. It adheres to the alveoli and reduces the surface tension, thereby preventing atelectasis (ventilation deficiency in the lung). The insufficiency of surfactant leads to massive respiratory failure in premature infants - a condition known as respiratory distress syndrome (RDS).
